Canopy and footfall

Do people choose the shaded side of the street? A thesis in progress, mapping tree canopy against where pedestrians actually walk in three Utrecht neighborhoods.

The thesis takes 42 street segments across Lombok, Wittevrouwen and Zuilen and asks a simple question: does the side of the street with the bigger canopy get more foot traffic? The canopy layer comes from the municipal tree register and a summer of hand-checking crown widths with a laser rangefinder. The footfall layer is my own: four counting sessions per segment, morning and late afternoon, on weekdays and one Saturday, 1,180 pedestrians logged by side of the street. Early results say yes in July and not at all in November, which is the finding I did not expect and the one the second chapter is now about. Supervised by the Urban Geography group; defense planned for June 2027.
